Good paving on a limited budget is possible — but it requires understanding where corners can genuinely be cut versus where cutting corners creates expensive problems later. Here's a practical guide to getting value without storing up trouble.
Where You Can Legitimately Save
Brick Choice
Clay bricks cost more than cement bricks. If budget is a constraint, a well-installed bevel bond driveway or patio will serve you well for many years. You're not sacrificing longevity by choosing cement over clay — you're making a reasonable trade-off.
Pattern Complexity
Intricate patterns take longer to lay, which means more labour cost. A straightforward running bond or herringbone produces less waste and takes less time than complex mixed patterns. Simpler patterns are not inferior — many of the best-looking driveways use classic herringbone throughout.
Area Size
If you're on a tight budget, consider whether you need to pave the entire proposed area immediately. Paving the driveway and leaving the patio for a later stage is a reasonable approach — each area can be done to full quality when budget allows.
Decorative Extras
Feature inserts, contrasting borders, step risers, raised beds — these add to the cost. A clean, well-executed job in one material without extras can look excellent.
Where You Should Not Save
Sub-base Preparation
This is non-negotiable. Proper excavation, correct compaction, adequate sand depth — skimping here is the cause of almost every paving failure. A contractor who offers to do the preparation "quickly" to save cost is offering you paving that will fail prematurely. The preparation cost is built into every legitimate quote for good reason.
Edge Restraints
Concrete haunching around the perimeter keeps your paving locked in place. Without it, bricks migrate and the surface loosens. This must be included. If a contractor offers to skip the edging to reduce the price, decline.
Drainage
Water management cannot be ignored. If the gradient doesn't drain water away from the house or if drainage outlets aren't provided, you'll have problems. This is a structural requirement, not a luxury.
How to Get Competitive Quotes Without Sacrificing Quality
- Get three quotes from established contractors, not just whoever is cheapest
- Ask each contractor to specify the preparation process in writing
- Compare like for like — make sure all quotes include the same scope
- Ask whether cheaper materials (cement vs clay) would reduce cost and by how much
- Ask if there's any flexibility on timing — contractors sometimes offer better rates for jobs that fill gaps in their schedule
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
