Why a Good Driveway Matters
The driveway is the most used paved area around most homes, and the one area most likely to take a pounding from vehicle loads, Gauteng's summer rains and the daily impact of parking. It is also the first thing that potential buyers see when they pull up to your property.
A well-installed driveway adds kerb appeal, improves property value and provides years of trouble-free service. A poorly installed one — laid on an inadequate base, without a proper edgebeam or with incorrect drainage — can begin failing within a few years, with bricks shifting, settling and allowing gaps to form.

Bevel Bond (Cement Pavers)
Bevel bonds are concrete pavers available in a range of colours — grey, charcoal, terracotta, tan and more. They are more affordable than clay and work well in a standard driveway application. A grey bevel bond with a charcoal border is a classic, clean combination that suits most Gauteng homes.
Flagstones and Colonial Stone
Flagstones give a more upmarket, dimensional look. Colonial Stone and similar flagstone formats can be very effective on wider driveways where a different aesthetic is required. They are typically more expensive but create a genuinely distinctive appearance.
Broken Brick Cobble
Broken brick cobble offers a rustic, old-world look and can be used effectively on circular driveways and feature areas. It is harder to walk on in high heels but very distinctive when installed well.
How We Install Driveways
Correct installation is what separates a paving job that lasts 20 years from one that starts failing within five. The key steps are:
- Excavation — removing the correct depth of soil to accommodate base layers and bricks
- Compaction of the sub-base — the earth must be properly compacted before any layers go down. Soft, spongy ground is a major warning sign
- Edgebeam installation — a concrete edgebeam must be poured around the perimeter before the bricks go down. The edgebeam holds everything together. One of the most common causes of driveway failure is an inadequate or missing edgebeam
- River sand layer — bricks must be laid on river sand, not on plastic sheeting. River sand allows rain to dissipate naturally into the soil. Plastic under the paving traps water and causes the paving to rot from beneath
- Brick laying and vibration — bricks are laid to pattern and compacted using a plate compactor to ensure they settle into the sand bed evenly
- Sand brushing — fine sand is brushed into the joints to lock the bricks together
Drainage Considerations
Drainage is critical and is an area that is often overlooked until something goes wrong. Before we quote, we assess the drainage situation on your property. If your ground becomes waterlogged after rain, or if water naturally flows toward the proposed paving area, we will discuss appropriate drainage solutions before installation begins.
On sloped driveways, we design the paving fall so that water drains away from the house and garage — not toward it. Correct fall is one of those invisible design decisions that makes a significant difference to how well your paving performs over time.
Driveway Design & Layout
A driveway needs to do more than look good — it must also function correctly. It needs sufficient width for vehicles to park and manoeuvre, clear access from the street, and enough turning space where the configuration of the property allows for it.
Where possible, we recommend incorporating flower beds or planted areas into the driveway design. Paving that runs wall-to-wall with no softening vegetation tends to look harsh, increases surface water runoff, and reduces the garden's appeal. A little planning at the design stage can make a significant difference to how the finished driveway looks.
Consistency in brick type across the driveway, pathways and other paved areas tends to look more cohesive than using very different bricks in different zones. If you want to combine brick types, ask us to show you examples where this has been done well.
Maintenance
A properly installed driveway requires very little maintenance. The most common maintenance tasks are:
- Sweeping or blowing debris from the surface regularly
- Re-sanding joints if sand washes out over time
- Replacing individual bricks if they become damaged by heavy vehicles or tree root movement
- Applying a sealant if you want to darken the colour or make oil stains easier to clean (optional)
